Loving Your Anger
Soul Empowerment Episode # 58
The idea of loving your anger may seem paradoxical—or even controversial—but suppressing this powerful emotion invariably leads to unexpected adverse consequences, and in some cases, even self-harm.
Anger is frequently condemned as a negative force, something to be avoided, but the reality is that it’s just an emotion like any other. While it carries a potent energy, anger is neither good nor bad—its unfavorable reputation comes not from the emotion itself, but from the dysfunctional ways in which some people deal with it.
In truth, anger is a messenger. It reveals where boundaries have been crossed, where injustice has occurred, or where deep values are under attack. It indicates that some kind of perceived violation has taken place—or may even be ongoing. It signals a possible threat to your well-being or that of your loved ones.
Loving your anger doesn’t mean empowering yourself to indulge in destructive behaviors. Rather, it means welcoming it as a signal for reflection, growth, and transformation. By embracing anger with compassion, you create space to understand its source (and its meaning). By acknowledging its validity, accepting it for what it truly is, and expressing it in a constructive and healthy way, you can restore balance and integrity in your life.
Receive some healing love energy into the topic of anger! For this episode of Soul Empowerment, we explore the full range of impact that anger can have on our lives. We cover the mixed messages we receive about anger, including passive-aggressive behaviors and the dangers of bottling emotions up. We also consider healthy ways to express anger and the benefits of embracing it as a catalyst for change and action. Here is a snapshot of the things we discuss:
What is Anger?
Is it an emotional response to an ego-mind trigger? Is it a defense mechanism? Is it a reaction to being ignored or unheard? Is it a response to a perceived injustice? Whatever you may perceive it to be, can it be healing? Can it bring about resolution and clarity?
What is it Pointing To?
What kinds of things activate your anger? Anger can serve as a powerful signal, revealing underlying feelings of fear, sadness, or frustration. Our understanding of, and relationship with, anger may vary. While many of us feel the pressure to suppress our anger, others let it flow.
Are You an Angry Person?
If you spend what seems like a lot of time dealing with feelings of anger, does that make you an “angry person”? No matter what you might think about it, you will probably find value in looking deep inside to uncover childhood wounds or trauma. You may discover some deep-seated anger festering within—and what better time to heal than right now?
Express or Suppress?
There are pros and cons to expressing anger—especially if you succumb to the ego-mind’s generally immature approach to expression. However, if you can learn to acknowledge and express your anger compassionately, then it can serve you in many beneficial ways. Of course, your situational circumstances will influence your response, but if you can manage your emotional triggers in a mature and healthy way, you can successfully deal with your anger in virtually any situation.
