Commitment Conundrum

Soul Empowerment Episode # 48

Everyone makes commitments in life. Careers, relationships, education, health and fitness, religion and spirituality, community involvement—the possibilities are virtually endless. We make commitments to our own lives as well as to the lives of other people. We even make commitments to do things to improve the world around us.

At the time that we make these commitments, we may be quite enthusiastic about the objectives we have agreed to support. But as time passes, situations and conditions change and as a result, we may find ourselves feeling less and less aligned with what we signed up for. What happens then? What are we to do?

Sometimes people find themselves at a crossroads: they no longer feel aligned with the original commitment, but because they believe in integrity, they believe they have an obligation to continue doing what they originally agreed to do—even though it no longer feels in integrity. It is quite an uncomfortable place to be, a form of cognitive dissonance. It is what we call the Commitment Conundrum, and it’s what we discuss in this episode of Soul Empowerment. Here are some of our main talking points:

Responsibility & Accountability

It’s natural for our commitment to wane and shift when we say “yes” to change. As we take steps toward our goals, our journey often reveals new information that can influence the choices to which we are committed. Taking ownership of what’s true in our heart allows us to stay flexible and fluid with our choices.

Honesty

When our level of commitment falters or changes, communicating clearly and honestly with self and others about this shift opens us up to possibilities beyond avoiding and breaking loyalties, or keeping them when they no longer feel aligned. In those human moments when we fail to honor our commitment, being honest also means owning and resolving broken promises.

Agreements

When we treat commitments as agreements that can be re-negotiated from an aligned and authentic place, we are free to change and even end an agreement rather than keep it out of a false sense of obligation.

Aligned Action

Saying we are committed to something is different than doing what it takes to achieve our desires. Commitment requires us to develop the habits and behaviors of the version of ourselves that already has what we desire. That’s how we close the gap between where we are and what we want. Fortunately, we can align with these actions more readily when our desire is greater than our discomfort or fear.

Patience

Not everything will always go the way we expect it to and this, despite how we initially feel, can be a good thing. It is important to be patient and open to adjustments, changes, new directions that can support in ways not immediately apparent.

Commitments are powerful threads that weave together our pursuits in careers, relationships, education, health, and beyond. While initial enthusiasm may align with objectives, the fluid nature of time and circumstances can lead to a Commitment Conundrum. By welcoming the natural shifts that occur, and remembering the importance of staying true to yourself, you can unravel the complexities and navigate the delicate balance between commitment and personal integrity.
