The holiday season is often portrayed as a time of warmth, joy, and connection—but it also brings stress for many. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressures of work, technology, and family. Adding holiday expectations into the mix can make overwhelm nearly unavoidable.
“Family gatherings” are familiar words that can create a unique pressure. Uniting the clan—with multiple generations, personalities, and worldviews in play—can be a challenge. Family events today also involve dietary needs, lifestyle choices, and technology. What’s meant to be a celebration can quickly devolve into a minefield.
And if that wasn’t enough, family reunions often trigger old behaviors. You might find yourself slipping back into childhood roles—becoming the “peacekeeper,” the “fixer,” the “troublemaker,” or the “quiet one”—even if those behaviors haven’t shown up in your daily life for years. These dormant patterns can re-emerge under stress, making you feel like you’ve lost the growth and maturity you’ve worked so hard to cultivate.
