Embracing Self-Love
Soul Empowerment Episode # 50
Valentine’s Day brings with it an atmosphere overflowing with romantic notions of love and affection for others. But most people overlook a fundamental aspect of love that seems to disappear into the background—Self-Love. Somehow, the idea of Self-Love has been conflated with selfishness and self-absorption—in other words, it has somehow become narcissistic to love oneself!
Well, in this episode of Soul Empowerment, we invite you to consider turning the spotlight inward; we encourage you to celebrate the most important relationship you’ll ever have—the one with yourself.
Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus suggested to us: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” In fact, he described this as the second most important commandment in the Law. The question for us today is, “What did Jesus really mean by this?” What does it mean for you, right here, right now?
Self-Love invites us to accept, appreciate and respect ourselves. It teaches us to honor our own needs, not in place of, but in addition to the needs of others. It teaches us to set healthy boundaries and to respect the boundaries of others. It invites us to forgive our own mistakes and to forgive the mistakes of others.
Perhaps Jesus’ famous admonition is a reminder that we are indeed All One, and you can only love others as deeply as you love yourself. What might be possible if each of us could embrace Self-Love? What impact might that have on humanity?
Join the Soul Empowerment team for this month’s episode as we explore the relevance and importance of Self-Love. Here’s a little preview of what we have in store for you:
A Love Meditation
We’ll kick off the show with an interactive experience to shed light on the people you love, why you love them and what that means in terms of Self-Love.
Acts of Self-Love
There are several habits we can adopt to cultivate healthy Self-Love. The team will discuss the importance of several of these, including:
- Forgiveness for yourself and others
- Gratitude towards yourself and others
- Opening to the fact you have choices and can choose what feels right for you
- Self-acknowledgment and self-praise
- Care, thought and consideration for yourself
Dispelling Some Myths
According to Psychology Today, self-love comprises four aspects:
- self-awareness,
- self-worth,
- self-esteem,
- and self-care.
To fully love yourself, all of these aspects must be present. Yet you may have experienced being called selfish, self-centered or self-absorbed when, in fact, you were practicing self-love. The team will examine and clarify these myths and misconceptions around self-love.
